Rainbow Dreams Trust (RDT)
Rainbow Dreams Trust (RDT), founded in 2005, is an NPO that works primarily with disadvantaged Township children and their families. Rainbow Dreams Trust was founded by Dannie Kagan, after she witnessed the desperate needs of the youth growing up in the Cape Town Townships. Statistics were shocking with limited, often inferior, education and a complete social breakdown of a society. This situation begged for a structured, nurturing environment for the children, who were struggling to combat their own complexities of young life. We implemented projects that could offer the children an optimistic path to follow, teaching them to have a positive attitude to their own situation, giving them direction, purpose and hope for their own future.
One of these amazing projects is the RDT Choir, established in 2010. Dean Kagan or ‘Maestro’ as he is called, created a choir with RDT’s first club in Hout Bay (Cape Town, South Africa) in 2010. Nine years later he had developed a 40 strong choir, with members from each Township club. RDT choir has competed in the ARTSCAPE schools competition every year. Dean’s teaching is not restricted to singing, but equipping his choir members with the tools to help them cope with the challenges they face in their environment. Such is the choir’s success in uplifting these children through voice that RDT will open its first ‘Choir club’, where 30 children will meet 5 days a week and a new RDT Choir will be created.
